| Damaging Coral Reefs: No! As a result of competition, those selling fossilized coral (Above-Sea Coral) mislead the public into thinking that because they remove their coral from the beaches they are not harming the coral reefs, implying that those “mining” the marine coral (Below-Sea Coral) must be harming the reefs. The truth is that the “harvesting” of the marine coral is done under the strict supervision of the Japanese Government who enforce, by jail incarceration, if the slightest damage occurs. In reality, the deposition of the coral sands (coral calcium) at the base of the reef actually inhibit the growth of the coral reefs. The islands of Okinawa are very shallow with little wave action allowing the coral sands to pile up, choking off the reef. In places like Hawaii, where there is lots of wave action, the coral sands get washed out into the ocean. When the coral sands are removed by harvesting, the reefs come alive and flourish. Thus, harvesting marine coral calcium is not only beneficial to man but to the coral reefs as well…the bottom line is that all coral from Okinawa has fantastic health benefits, but the marine coral is far superior.
